The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has further advanced its use of drones in law enforcement with the “Drone as First Responder” (DFR) program. Introduced by Mayor Eric Adams and Interim Commissioner Tom Donlon, this initiative integrates sophisticated drone technology to improve the department’s emergency response efforts across New York City. The program exemplifies the effective application of drones in densely populated urban areas, reinforcing the NYPD’s commitment to enhancing public safety and operational efficiency.
Active in five precincts across three boroughs, the DFR program positions the NYPD at the forefront of drone-assisted public safety. Each precinct uses two drones that are deployed autonomously to incidents such as missing person alerts, gunshot detections, and crime reports. The drones transmit real-time, high-definition audio and video feeds, accessible to officers via department-issued smartphones. This capability provides responders with immediate situational awareness.
The DFR initiative provides significant benefits for both public and officer safety, particularly in congested areas where quick response times are crucial. Drones can often arrive at scenes more rapidly than ground units, providing aerial views and early insights. This capability helps responders evaluate incidents, monitor crowds, and manage traffic to ensure safety.
Since 2018, the NYPD has employed drones for a variety of tasks, including search-and-rescue operations, evidence collection, and infrastructure checks. The success of these applications highlights the effectiveness of drones in urban settings where mobility is often limited.
The DFR program’s drone capabilities include:

Additionally, a member of the NYPD’s Legal Bureau oversees each operation to ensure accountability and adherence to regulations.
