China continues to push the boundaries of drone and robotic technologies with the introduction of a groundbreaking UAV feature—an ability to split into several individual aerial crafts, each maintaining a high level of operational efficiency.
The revolutionary modular splitting drone capability has been developed by researchers at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, as reported by the South Morning China Post. Described as visually resembling a large consumer-grade drone, this UAV can separate mid-flight into up to six smaller monocopters, all functioning effectively.
According to details extracted from a peer-reviewed paper authored by lead researcher Shi Zhiwei and published in February, the smaller UAVs, once detached, operate at nearly double the flight efficiency of other monocopters. Notably, China’s unified drone surpasses previously tested configurations of individual craft in terms of operational effectiveness.
The innovative approach lies in the contrasting design methodology employed. Unlike earlier concepts that focused on combining individual UAVs to operate jointly, China’s new method allows a single drone to be disassembled into several fully functional smaller vehicles.
Taking inspiration from the structure of maple seeds, the robust puzzle-formation drone exhibits remarkable capabilities, flying significant distances even in adverse conditions before dividing into multiple smaller craft. These smaller units can perform a variety of missions, including reconnaissance, target tracking, and potential offensive actions.
In military contexts, this capability offers several advantages. The unified UAV’s endurance enables it to penetrate deeper into enemy airspace compared to individual craft, operating up to 40% more effectively than standalone drones when deployed in a swarm.
Furthermore, the splitting feature of this Chinese innovation poses challenges for both manual and automated anti-drone systems. Such systems, initially identifying and preparing responses to a single UAV, may encounter unexpected complications when faced with the sudden multiplication of drones upon reaching the target.
