In Colorado, a local police department is discovering innovative ways to use drones in crime-solving efforts. Since incorporating drones into their operations in April, the Wheat Ridge Police Department has utilized them nearly daily to assist in responding to various 911 calls. Alex Rose, the department’s public information officer, expressed enthusiasm about the drones’ potential, particularly in enhancing officer safety and improving the efficiency of their operations. The department views these drones as a valuable tool in their broader strategy to modernize law enforcement techniques.
Sgt. John Bowman, who oversees the drone training program for Wheat Ridge police, noted that the drones are equipped with advanced Zoom capabilities, enabling officers to monitor situations from a safe distance. “It takes a lot of practice. A lot of patience. A lot of repetition. But these camera systems and these operating systems cover lots of different areas,” Bowman explained. He added that the integration of drones into their daily routines has already shown promising results. Recently, one of the department’s drones captured footage of a suspect during a break-in at an apartment, illustrating their effectiveness in real-time crime prevention.
Following the acquisition of a warrant, the drone was deployed inside the residence to conduct further investigation. According to Rose, the drone discovered both a dog and an individual hiding in a closet. The person was subsequently arrested, and the investigation remains active, with further details expected to emerge as the case develops. Additionally, Wheat Ridge police have found drones useful in investigating traffic accidents and monitoring large gatherings, such as festivals. These successes have reinforced the department’s commitment to expanding the use of drones in future operations, potentially setting a precedent for other law enforcement agencies to follow.
