Drone Delivery Program Launched for Medical Supplies to Smith Island

A new initiative from the state of Maryland aims to transform healthcare access for the isolated residents of Smith Island, who depend on timely delivery of medications and medical resources.

The University of Maryland, in collaboration with several partners, is testing the use of drones to improve the delivery of essential medical supplies to some of the most remote communities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

This innovative program is being funded by a $1.76 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, awarded to Maryland’s Department of Planning, to explore advanced aviation technologies.

As part of the initiative, drones will be used to transport medical packages between Crisfield and Smith Island. The island, home to a few hundred residents, is only accessible by boat or plane, which can be a challenge for individuals with urgent medical needs, such as those requiring insulin or specific dietary provisions that often have to be delivered directly.

The use of drones could significantly reduce the time healthcare workers spend traveling back and forth to deliver these vital supplies.

In addition to improving healthcare delivery, the project could serve as a model for creating a regional network of medical supply distribution, with potential uses in disaster relief scenarios. During events like Hurricane Helene, drones could deliver emergency supplies to areas that are otherwise difficult to access.

The program is being developed by the University of Maryland UAS Research and Operations Center (UROC) in partnership with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Aviation Science Program and School of Pharmacy. The team is in the process of selecting a commercial drone company to handle the technical aspects, secure the necessary Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approvals, and manage the drone flights.

Local healthcare providers are also involved, helping to coordinate medical and pharmaceutical deliveries. Efforts are already underway to procure drones and inform the Smith Island community about the upcoming program.

The drones used in this initiative will likely be able to carry loads of around five pounds, according to UROC. These deliveries could be life-saving, allowing for the transport of time-sensitive items such as medications that spoil easily, Narcan for rapid response to overdoses, and lab samples.

For the Smith Island community, drone deliveries could be crucial during times of adverse weather, such as when ice prevents boats from reaching the island. In these instances, the state currently relies on helicopters for emergency medical situations. Flooding on the Crisfield side can also pose challenges for transportation. Other rural areas, such as Tangier Island and various parts of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, could also benefit from similar medical drone services.
