South Fulton Police Introduce Drone Initiative to Enhance Emergency Response

In a bid to bolster their emergency response capabilities, the South Fulton Police Department in Atlanta, Georgia, is poised to deploy drones to attend to 911 calls under the initiative titled “Drones as First Responders.”

The department recently conducted field tests for the drones at a remote location, marking the inception of this innovative program. Partnering with Skyfire, an Atlanta-based company specializing in drone technology for law enforcement, South Fulton Police aims to strategically position these drones throughout the city.

Captain Brendan O’Neill emphasized the significance of this technological advancement, stating, “The first two will be placed in the areas that we have the highest call volumes.” These drones will be operated and monitored from within the department’s headquarters, allowing trained officers to analyze surveillance footage and license plate data in real-time.

Currently, the department possesses seven drones housed within patrol units, with plans to acquire two additional drones exclusively dedicated to this initiative. O’Neill highlighted the potential of drones in reducing response times, stating, “The value of the drones is that it can get to calls much quicker than an officer in the car.”

South Fulton Police’s adoption of drone technology positions them as the second police department in the state to embrace such innovation, following the footsteps of the Brookhaven Police Department. O’Neill remarked on the transformative impact of this initiative, noting its capacity to enhance officer safety, community security, and mitigate officer fatigue.

As the program gears up for implementation within the next three months, South Fulton Police anticipates significant improvements in emergency response effectiveness through the integration of drones as an integral component of their operations.
